Chapter 186: Descent 1
Chapter 186: Descent 1
Back at Offshore city, while my reflection swam towards the hill whare the cave was in the distant sea, I gathered the group which consisted of; Alistair, Anastasia, Rose, Fabian, Levi, Aric, Calum, and myself.
We were the ones who were going to raid the cave. As for the rest, like Delilah, Sasha, Dion, and the bitch, I concluded that they simply weren’t strong enough to face what was in there.
Anyway, the moment my reflection’s presence became known at the Naga cave, I instantly straightened up.
"What’s the matter?" Anastasia who stood next to me asked.
"My cover has been blown, we need to move now." I said steering the airship into the air.
"I still can’t get over the fact that you have an airship in your spatial storage." Aric muttered in awe as his eyes once again surveyed the interior of the of the cockpit.
"Yes, it is fascinating and all, but what’s the situation over there?" Anastasia rolled her eyes and asked.
"I’m currently engaging both the heretics and some nasty, nasty Naga beasts. Trust me you do not want to get close to them." I shuddered.
"Are they that bad?" Alistair chuckled nervously.
"You have no idea." I shook my head as the airship began moving towards the sea. However, not long after, my form shifted to that of a teenage merfolk, putting everyone on edge. They still hadn’t fully become accustomed to me being able to change my appearance.
But they soon calmed down as their rational mind overrode their instincts. "What’s the matter now?" Rose asked as everyone looked on with curiosity.
"I just met the perpetrator behind everything." I muttered as the airship shot towards the cave. "He’s also the one who can activate the ritual." I added.
"How strong?" Sia asked with a frown, and I could see the rest were curious to know too.
"He’s at the Zeta rank." I replied and some of their faces relaxed a little.
Rose then asked.
"Are there any others as strong as him?
I shook my head.
"Not to my knowledge."
However, a grim disposition soon crept on my face before I suddenly swerved the airship to the right, and made a U-turn just a few meters away from the cave.
The others almost lost their footing due to my maneuver, and I could hear Calum hurtling a long string of curses, but I had not the time to listen to him at all. A grim frown carved itself on my face.
"Shit!" I cursed as my form shifted back to my original self.
"Damon, what happ...."
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!!
Before Sia could finish what she was saying, the hill housing the Naga cave behind us, went supernova.
For a moment, the entire world went white, everything froze, before a devastating shockwave of cataclysmic proportions instantly wrecked our airship into pieces upon impact and sent us all along with the pieces of the wrecked airship crashing into the sea.
I crashed hard into the sea. And forget what anyone says about falling into the water. At absurd speeds, crashing into water was just as hard as crashing on a hard rock of not more.
For a long while, I felt disoriented as I fought against the rapidly displacing tides and water pressure, before I kicked back against the water and shot upwards.
I surfaced to what could be called a catastrophe. The world around me, and from the perspective of all my reflections in the area was in total chaos. During the supernova, a massive tsunami had swept through most of Offshore city.
I felt a sinking feeling in my stomach, all these had happened in only ten seconds. What I tried to prevent had already happened, and I was in no way capable of bringing an end to it, plus it was all my fault.
No, it was my arrogance. I was arrogant enough to think that everything would go the exact same way I planned. But in my defence, how was I suppose to put the heretic absorbing the nexus and catapulting the ritual straight to completion stage into my equation.
There was only one way I could have counted that as a variable, and that was if I knew he could use absorb the nexus, but I didn’t know it was possible. Still, this didn’t absolve me of all faults.
At that point, I felt a hand tapping on my shoulder, I turned in reflex and swung my arm, but my fist struck the air, generating a small vaccum, and displacing the water around me.
"Snap out of it, Damon." Sia muttered, but unlike her usual smiling visage, her visage had turned grim, but even that was a sight to behold, especially her damp hair that stuck to her forehead.
"Sorry." I muttered. Lost in my thoughts, I had completely forgotten that there were other people besides me floating in the water.
Normally, in any other situation, I would whine about my precious airship being destroyed, but now was not the time because;
"Hehehehe, hehehehehe." A shrill laughter vibrated through the space. The sheer malice radiating from that laughter froze us in our spot. And it wasn’t only in the sea, the malice covered even the entirety of Offshore island.
But maybe because I had particularly strong mental strength due to my ability, I was the first to break out.
"Wake up." I shook Sia and broke her out of it, and shouted at the rest, breaking them out of their reverie.
"W...what was that?" Calum asked trembling.
My disposition grew grim.
"That is the result of the ritual the heretics were setting up. They used the body of a Naga queen as a vessel, and the people they captured as a sacrifice to pave the way for a Darkwalker to descend upon this plane." I sighed. "Or so I was told."
"...."
"...."
Everyone froze. The word Darkwalker was enough to make them. Who were Darkwalkers? The were the same invaders that even the four races could defeat, and had to look for a way to close the rifts that allowed the Darkwalkers to enter this plane.
That was how terrifying Darkwalkers were, and now, here I was telling them that a Darkwalker had descended onto this plane even if through procession, it’s a good thing they didn’t lose their wills outright. But then again, they were the main casts, side characters, and maybe a third rate villain and an extremely powerful extra.
"W....who t...t...told you that?" Surprisingly, the first person to break out of it and ask was Calum. Even though he was filled with dread, he was still the first to break out of it.
Though, he wasn’t the only one filled with dread, the others were too, be it Rose, Alistair himself, and even Anastasia. And as for myself, maybe I was the one filled with dread the most among them all.
"It was the heretic on charge of the ritual." I replied flatly.
"Could be be lying?" Aric asked, already perspiring.
I slowly shook my head.
"I don’t think he is."
"What do we do now?" Alistair asked.
"What else do we do? We run." I said as if it was obvious. Because we were conversing, it was easy to forget that we were still swimming in the sea.
Well in the novel, they tried to fight the Darkwalker, but it didn’t turn out well. You see, even though the Naga queen was only at the Zeta- rank when the ritual was done, the Darkwalker possessing it was easily able to increase it’s rank the more it fought. It led to the point where it reached the Delta+ rank.
"No, we can’t just do that, what about the people in the city?" Is this kid retarted? The people in the city? Do I give a fuck about that?
Perhaps if the situation had still been manageable, I would have tried to fight the Darkwalker even before Alistair did.
"Are you stupid? Don’t you feel the malevolence radiating from that thing?" Aric asked irritated.
We weren’t seeing the thing yet, but it’s aura was still washing over us, however, the moment Aric spoke, a powerful wave washed towards us as something rose from the sea, blasting apart the sinking debris of the Naga cave.
It was a massive and terrifying creature with radiating a dark baleful aura and it’s upper body was that of a human, and it’s lower body that of a snake. It was the body of the Naga queen I had seen, only bigger.
"It’s been nearly a millennia since I last set foot in his realm, yet it’s inhabitants are still as insignificant as ever." The creature cackled with a shrill female voice. "Don’t you think?" It’s eyes pierced through the distance and settled on us.
The pure malevolence in those eyes made my stomach sink. "Do not look into it’s eyes!" I shouted, but someone, no, two figures were already rushing at the creature.
"We’ll be damned."
