Chapter 44 Suren's Hint
Chapter 44 Suren's Hint
"Viscount Howard?" Professor Devont repeated the name, still cutting his steak, though his movements were a little slower. "Why are you suddenly asking about him?"
"Surren and I...received a bounty today...issued by Viscount Howard," Karl interjected, his mouth full of steak, his words slightly slurred. He chewed a couple of times and swallowed.
He wiped his mouth, cut another piece, and continued, "I think this nobleman is quite easy to fool; he spent over a hundred pounds on a simple tracking mission."
Professor Devonte frowned, picked up his wine glass, and took a small sip of red wine. "Actually, Viscount Howard is a rather famously shrewd man; he generally wouldn't..."
Halfway through his sentence, Professor Devont's gaze fell on Suren, whose eyes twitched slightly, the movement somewhat deliberate.
"...But he seems to be researching something lately." Professor Derwent changed the subject, putting down his glass and rubbing his fingers on it. "He's even sold off quite a few things for it, which might be why he's become so incoherent."
"Could you tell me about Viscount Howard's family and some of his stories?" Suren cut off a small piece of beef, put it in his mouth, and asked casually.
The professor glanced at Suren, seemingly trying to glean something from his expression.
"Actually, I don't know much about Viscount Howard, but I've heard that the Howard family has very close ties with the church." He paused, as if organizing his thoughts, "Almost every year, the Howard family makes some donations to the church, and the amounts are not small. The family members are known for their devout faith."
"A devout believer..." Suren murmured the word, without pressing further.
According to information Suren had previously obtained, Viscount Howard was currently obsessed with the pursuit of "godhood," which could hardly be considered devout worship; it could even be described as "blasphemy."
Given their close ties with the church, the Howard family must have possessed information known only to those within the church. This might not be absolute secrets like the "nature of power," but they should have had easy access to hidden histories.
"Perhaps the deal between Mrs. Howard and the Knights of Eternal Oath is related to these things."
Suren pondered this, but he was also puzzled. If his guess was correct, what would the "Eternal Oath Knights" need these things for?
Just as Suren was deep in thought, Professor Derwent's words interrupted his train of thought: "Karl, how's your alchemy research going lately?"
Upon hearing the professor's question, Carl frowned, and his movements slowed considerably.
"In fact, I've been stuck in the same place lately. I can still only craft some simple items." He sighed as he said this. "Forget about becoming a saint, I don't even have a clear sign of the key to enlightenment right now."
Suren's heart stirred. He lowered his head, picked up a piece of mutton, put it in his mouth, and only after swallowing it did he look up at Karl.
"Perhaps you should give up the idea of making alchemy a profession," Suren said casually, as if offering a suggestion offhand. "Treat yourself as a devout believer."
"A devout believer?" Karl asked, puzzled. He looked at Suren blankly, seemingly not understanding what Suren meant.
"I find Suren's idea quite interesting. Perhaps saints are like that too, seeing themselves as devout believers." Professor Derwent saw through Suren's intention and offered a timely suggestion, "Perhaps you should think about what God has given you, and that will make you stronger."
After listening to the professor's words, Carl stared blankly at the steak in front of him, motionless.
After a long pause, he nodded, his tone somewhat dazed: "That seems to make a lot of sense..."
After saying that, he casually picked up a piece of steak and put it in his mouth, chewing mechanically with a somewhat blank look in his eyes, as if savoring the steak and also savoring the professor's words.
Seeing Karl's expression, Suren and the professor exchanged a smile.
Time passed slowly, and in the blink of an eye, the three of them, having finished lunch, arrived in the living room. Karl sat on the sofa, resting his chin on his hand, seemingly still pondering what had just been said.
Suren and Professor De Went exchanged a glance but remained silent.
The two walked up to the second floor one after the other and arrived at the professor's laboratory. Compared to last time, the laboratory had not changed much.
"I've made some progress in studying that peculiar eyeball you gave me last time, but unfortunately I've only figured out part of it."
As he spoke, Devont walked to the leftmost cabinet and took out the eyeball.
"The power it contains isn't very strong, but its inherent characteristics are extremely complex." The professor lifted the lid of the box, revealing the eyeball lying there quietly. "I can only determine that its characteristics are related to secrecy."
At this point, the professor shook his head, a rare hint of shame appearing on his face: "I have absolutely no way of analyzing its internal structure; it's as if it doesn't belong to this world."
Suren was not disappointed, after all, the origin of this eyeball was very complicated. It was a product of the power behind the "Mirror Demon", and there might only be one in the world at present.
Given Professor Derwent's assessment that this item is not very strong, it is basically impossible to make it into a powerful permanent item.
Thinking of this, Suren looked at Professor Derwent: "Then do you have any other way to use this eyeball to make something?"
"Enchanting is definitely out of the question." Professor Derwent shook his head, a hint of regret in his voice. "After all, the foundation of enchanting is understanding the structure of materials."
He paused, then changed the subject, his tone regaining some interest: "However, based on its properties, it can be made into a potion with the help of other materials; it can probably make two doses."
Suren let out a soft breath, feeling a little more relaxed. As long as it worked, that was fine.
Suren has recently had a strong feeling that danger is approaching. He feels that his current strength is too weak and that he should try to convert everything he can use into combat power.
Without continuing the discussion about the potion's creation, Suren reached out her right hand to the pouch at her waist. As she put her hand into the pouch, a barely perceptible light flashed from the ring on her left hand, and a necklace appeared on her right hand—"Ellie's Tear."
As for why he would take such an unnecessary step, it's because Suren doesn't want the professor to know about the existence of the "Mandala Ring" for the time being. After all, this item is too powerful, so it's better to keep a low profile.
Professor Devont's gaze was drawn to the exquisite necklace. He adjusted his glasses, and in that instant, Suren caught a fleeting glimpse of the scales in the professor's eyes.
In an instant, the professor felt as if he had been electrocuted, and he took a step back. He couldn't help but cry out in surprise:
"Aksha artifacts?"
