Chapter 6: My Sister's Vegetable Rice Caused the Immortal Venerable to Break Down on the Spot
Lu Jingchen strode out of the air-conditioned Yundian Clubhouse.
The midday sun beat down on him, but it did nothing to melt the icy glare in his eyes.
"The blood feud is only half settled. I need to go find my stubborn but soft-hearted little girl first."
He muttered to himself, glancing around.
Once he was sure no one was paying attention to him, his figure instantly transformed into a streak of silver-white light.
In the blink of an eye, they disappeared around the street corner without leaving a trace.
They operate primarily in the secular world, maintaining a low profile and avoiding trouble.
The cheap rental buildings in the old town are in terrible disarray.
The plaster was peeling off piece by piece, revealing the blackened cement underneath.
The stairwell was filled with the smells of cooking oil and mildew, and the noise from neighbors arguing and children crying was giving me a headache.
Lu Jingchen's figure appeared out of thin air in front of an iron door on the top floor.
Looking at the peeling paint on the door, a pang of heartache instantly welled up in his eyes.
He lived in the Cangyuan Realm for three thousand years in magnificent palaces and on a floor paved with warm jade.
I never imagined that my own sister would live in such a place.
He composed himself and gently knocked on the door.
Knock knock knock.
Who is it?
Lu Qingyuan's wary voice immediately came from inside the room.
"It's me, Lu Jingchen."
He softened his voice, trying to make himself sound less aggressive.
With a click, the iron gate opened a narrow crack.
Lu Qingyuan's slightly haggard face was revealed, with faint dark circles under her eyes.
Upon recognizing him outside the door, the slight doubt on her face vanished instantly, replaced by a dark expression.
"Why did you come looking for me again?"
Her tone was as cold as ice, showing not a shred of kindness.
"You're my own sister. If I don't come looking for you, who else can I turn to?"
Lu Jingchen looked sincere, completely ignoring her cold expression.
Lu Qingyuan scoffed, scanning him up and down with mockery in her eyes.
"What? You ran off for most of the day, did you really impulsively go looking for Zhao Tianyu?"
"You? Don't end up getting yourself killed before you even see the person."
Seeing her stubbornness, Lu Jingchen couldn't help but smile.
"Oh, you're so concerned about me?"
"You say you don't acknowledge me as your brother, but deep down you're still worried about me, right?"
Lu Qingyuan's secret was exposed, and her face instantly stiffened.
Enraged, he raised his hand to slam the door shut.
"Who cares about you! Get lost!"
Lu Jingchen reacted quickly, reaching out to block the iron gate.
Her tone softened instantly, taking on a pitiful air.
"No, little sister, can I come in and sit down?"
"I just got back, and I don't know anyone here. I don't even have a place to stay."
"I can't be expected to sleep on the streets, can I?"
Lu Qingyuan looked at the faded thin T-shirt he was wearing.
And his pitiful act made my heart soften instantly.
But she still wouldn't let go of his words, and with a disgruntled expression, she let go of his hand and turned to walk inside.
"Come in."
"Just so you know, this is a single room with only one bed."
"Either you sleep on the floor, or you sit all night; I won't care."
Lu Jingchen immediately squeezed through the crack in the door, his face instantly beaming with smiles.
He acted like a child who had just received candy, without the slightest bit of airs of a celestial being.
"It's alright, it's alright, as long as there's a place to shelter from the wind and rain, that's fine."
"I'm not picky; I'm content as long as I have a place to stay."
As darkness fell, only a dim, yellow light remained on in the cramped rented room.
The light was so dim, and the room was so small that it was difficult to even turn around.
There was only a single bed and a small folding table with peeling paint in the room.
An open plastic lunchbox was on the table.
There was only a little bit of white rice left in the box, with some boiled vegetables on top.
There wasn't a trace of oil in it; it was as bland as food fed to rabbits.
Lu Jingchen's gaze fell on the lunchbox, and the smile on his face vanished instantly.
His face gradually darkened, and his heart felt as if it were being gripped tightly by a hand.
The pain was so intense that he could barely breathe and his voice trembled uncontrollably.
"Qingyuan, is this all you usually eat?"
Lu Qingyuan was tidying up the clothes on the bed without turning her head.
His tone was nonchalant, showing no sign of grievance.
"What? It's not working?"
"In this situation, it's good enough to have something to eat, let alone be picky."
Lu Jingchen took a deep breath, and his eyes instantly reddened.
In the Cangyuan Realm, even the pills he casually tossed to spirit beasts were more nutritious than this.
His sister had been living this kind of life during the three years he was gone.
He spoke each word with unwavering conviction, allowing no room for doubt.
"Don't worry. Your brother's back."
"From now on, I will never let you suffer like this again."
Lu Qingyuan turned around, looked at his serious expression, and chuckled.
His eyes were full of undisguised sarcasm.
"You won't let me suffer? What makes you think you can stop me from suffering?"
"Do you even have money? You don't even have a place to live, yet you talk such big words."
Lu Jingchen looked confident, patted his chest, and didn't sound fake at all.
"What's wrong with not having money? I've got plenty of skills, why would I be afraid of not being able to make money?"
Lu Qingyuan's brows furrowed instantly, and her tone became serious.
"Making money? Then you're not going to read books anymore?"
"Your parents valued your grades the most when they were alive. Are you just going to quit school like that?"
"How can you face them?"
Lu Jingchen was stunned for a moment, and his mind quickly weighed the options.
The college entrance exam? For a celestial being who has lived for three thousand years, that's nothing more than a piece of cake.
Making money is an even greater advantage; the two things are not contradictory at all.
He nodded immediately, speaking with absolute certainty.
"Don't worry, I will definitely study, and I must earn money."
"These two things are completely unrelated and do not conflict at all."
Lu Qingyuan looked at him, let out another cold laugh, her eyes full of disbelief.
"It's been months! How come you've become so arrogant?"
"You really think money comes from thin air? You think you can just ask for it?"
Seeing her disbelieving expression, Lu Jingchen deliberately lowered his voice.
He acted all mysterious, with a slight smile on his lips.
"That's not necessarily true."
"Who knows, maybe your brother really is a god?"
Lu Qingyuan was so angry that she laughed and rolled her eyes dramatically.
They stared at him as if he were an idiot, their faces full of speechlessness.
"If you are a deity, then I am the Queen Mother of the West."
"I think you've damaged your brain from being missing for these past few months, haven't you?"
Lu Jingchen didn't argue, but just looked at her seriously.
His tone was firm, without a hint of joking.
Believe it or not, it's up to you.
"Anyway, you'll know whether what I said is true or not in three days."
Lu Qingyuan was too lazy to argue with him and rolled her eyes at him.
He turned around, grabbed the blanket from the bed, and threw it hard on the floor.
"I can't be bothered with you, you're always acting crazy."
"I've put the blanket here for you. You can sleep or sit as you please, just don't disturb my sleep."
