Chapter 31 Mrs. Marlin's Dessert Shop
Chapter 31 Mrs. Marlin's Dessert Shop
While Altair was still pondering what potion to use on her, Vera put down the black panther snack she was holding and came over, saying, "Count Altair, you're awake."
Looking in the direction of the sound, Altair saw that Vera was staring intently at the "Black Panther" in her arms with her big eyes, her gaze filled with longing.
Left with no other option, Altair could only hand her the "Black Panther" he was carrying and ask, "Where are Hahn and the others?"
Vera, who had just received the "Black Panther," reacted and said, "Butler Hahn and Eileen have taken many servants to the suburban manor to prepare for tomorrow's banquet. Butler Freya has gone to deliver the banquet invitations."
"When Butler Hahn left, he took a lot of things with him. There were even several carriages, and they wouldn't let us get close at all. Only Captain Simon and a few others were allowed to approach. I thought it was some delicious food and wanted to sneak over to take a look, but they absolutely wouldn't let me. I think this is a disregard for your authority as your personal maid, and we can use this as grounds to punish them."
Seeing Vera pouting in anger, looking so righteous, Altair smiled and tapped her forehead, saying, "Are you angry because my authority has been challenged? I get the feeling that you're maliciously retaliating against them for not giving you something good to eat."
Upon hearing Altair's words, Vera immediately retorted, "Of course! I am Count Altair's personal maid. Even if they have the orders of the head butler, Hahn, they have no right to refuse my inspection."
"Of course, if they are willing to bring a small cake from Mrs. Milin's shop to apologize, Vera will forgive their mistake."
Looking at her now, Altair knew that she was angry, but she was also craving some cake.
"All you think about now is delicious food, aren't you afraid of gaining weight? Look at your sister Eileen, she at least knows how to help Hahn with chores. If you end up fat and immature, I'll just throw you away."
Vera wasn't frightened by those words. Instead, she smiled and said, "Count Altair is lying. You would never abandon me. Besides, I exercise every day, just like my sister, to maintain my figure."
"Besides, I'm so cute. Butler Hahn even said that since we came, you've been in a much better mood than before, and you're glad you made the decision to buy me and my sister."
"However, I still don't understand what Butler Hahn meant by his last sentence. Did he mean that he bought us two to be your bed partners, that he needs us to sleep with you?"
"Vera is too stupid to know what this means. I do know about relationships between men and women, though; they taught us about it back then."
"But I don't know what 'being your bed partner' means. When I asked my sister, she wouldn't say, she just blushed and said things like, 'We're adults now, it's okay,' so what does it mean?"
Looking at Vera shaking her head, Altair felt that he really needed her. Although she was sometimes clumsy, it was precisely because of this personality that she was so lovable.
However, they were not very lucky. They were twins, good-looking, orphans, and had elven blood. All sorts of misfortunes piled up on them.
If one were born into an ordinary family, they would probably have had a good ending.
"If you want to know the answer to this question, you'll have to figure it out yourself."
"Go and tidy up a bit, we're going out for a walk in a bit."
The opening words made Vera fall into thought, but the mention of shopping immediately brought her back to normal, and she said, "Count Altair, that's wonderful. I don't have much to get ready right now, I'll go with you to change. I'll get your clothes ready..."
..........
"Uncle Neil, could you please drive to Mrs. Milling's dessert shop in the South District of Big Joe, on the Royal Mile?"
Listening to Vera rattle off the address with ease, Altair shook his head helplessly. She's even more of a homebody than me, so why does she know the address so well? Is this the power of a foodie?
Vera turned her head and said happily, "Luckily, Butler Hahn wasn't here today. He took out all the carriages to use, otherwise we would have had to rent them."
Listening to Vera's gossip, Altair quipped, "I think you're just lazy and don't want to walk. And why are you carrying the black panther around? Aren't you afraid it'll hurt someone?"
Vera didn't refute, but said, "Black Panther is so pitiful at home all by himself. When we go out shopping, he has to stay home alone. It's so sad to think about. I'll keep an eye on him."
.........
After a journey of less than 20 minutes, the carriage finally arrived at Mrs. Marlin's dessert shop, which Vera had been longing to visit.
After accompanying Altair out of the car and into the dessert shop, her eyes lingered on the various desserts.
Seeing Vera's expression, Altair casually said, "You choose for yourself."
Upon hearing this, Vera smiled and walked forward, pointing to the display case. She said to the salesperson, "I'd like this lemon mini cake, this strawberry cake, this chocolate cake, and this...this Black Forest cake..."
.........
Altair sipped his black tea, watching Vera devour various desserts and cakes, and was quite amazed.
Such a small stomach, yet it can eat so much—it's already ate four small cakes. Although the cakes themselves weren't big, they were sickeningly sweet; Altair only ate one piece and didn't want any more.
..........
When Vera stopped eating, Altair asked directly, "Are you full?"
Upon hearing this, the former shook his head and said, "Although the cakes are delicious, I don't want to eat them today. I'll take the rest home to share with others and save some for tomorrow."
In response to Vera's words, Altair could only smile and offer a gentle reminder, "We're having a party in the suburbs tomorrow. Do you think we'll be short of desserts? Besides, it's summer now. Do you think the cakes we buy today will still be edible tomorrow?"
.......
In the end, Vera left the dessert shop with a large bag of small cakes, but she wouldn't leave any to eat the next day.
The desserts weren't expensive; we bought 25 cakes in total, plus tea at the shop, which cost 5 sous and 6.5 pence, which is about 250 yuan.
On average, a slice of cake costs less than 3 pence, and this is in a country's capital. This shows that money, before inflation, still has strong purchasing power.
Vera, whose wish had been fulfilled, hummed a little tune to express her inner joy.
There should be a church of the Earth Mother Goddess in Da Qiao South District, which is worth a visit on the way.
