Chapter 76 Coin Flips and Solicitation
Chapter 76 Coin Flips and Solicitation
The casino's oak doors closed behind him, and a salty sea breeze blew in. Lorne took a deep breath, trying to dispel the lingering smell of tobacco in his nostrils.
"It was still a bit too flashy..." Feeling the chilly sea breeze, Lorne gradually recovered from the excitement of winning money.
Thinking about the card game just now, Lorne smiled helplessly. Luck is a really unpredictable thing. He had almost resigned himself to his fate, planning to lose and pay some money to leave. Who would have thought that this would happen in the end?
The smug look on the man's face when he threw out the bomb, followed by his immediate collapse due to a bad hand, made Lorne's lips curl into a smile as he rubbed his fingertips against the newly acquired fifty-pound note in his pocket.
There were quite a few people in the casino, and as an outsider, I couldn't guarantee I wouldn't be targeted. A few dozen pounds wasn't a lot, but it wasn't a small amount either; for laborers in this era, it was a huge sum of money.
And who knows if that man might have other intentions? He might have to follow the rules inside the casino, but with that defiant attitude, who knows what might happen outside?
In the pirate-infested coastal waters, a stranger carrying dozens of pounds swaggering through the streets is tantamount to holding up a target and waiting to be robbed.
This place is not safe to stay any longer, I should hurry back to the ship... Having made up my mind, Lorne quickened his pace and headed towards the dock.
Meow~
Laki suddenly began to squirm restlessly in the bag, her claws gently scratching his abdomen through the fabric.
"Laki, you noticed it too?" Lorne asked in a low voice, his fingers unconsciously touching his handbag.
Laki didn't respond. Instead, she suddenly darted out of her bag, her orange figure flashing in the moonlight as she lightly leaped onto the roof of a nearby tavern and disappeared into the shadows in the blink of an eye.
Ugh, I hope I'm not really that unlucky, that someone actually comes to ambush me...
Lorne's neck hairs stood on end. He quickened his pace without making a sound and turned into a narrow alley.
The shoes made a deep sound as they stepped on the damp road, but about a few dozen steps later, another set of footsteps could be heard.
He deliberately took a roundabout route, weaving through several alleys, but the sound of his footsteps always followed behind him.
Lorne suddenly turned around at an alley corner and said in a low voice, "After following you for so long, aren't you going to come out and meet me?"
A soft laugh came from the shadows. Danitz, draped in a black cloak, strolled out slowly, his sallow eyebrows making a striking impression.
"Good alertness." He grinned. "No wonder you can beat me several times in a row."
Lorne shifted slightly to the side, his right hand subtly moving closer to his waist. The other's spirituality gave him a strange sense of oppression.
Could he be an extraordinary being?
He opened his mouth with a business-like smile:
"Friend, winning and losing are normal in card games. I just had a bit more luck today."
"You didn't start following me just because I won a few dozen pounds from you, did you?"
"Don't be nervous." Sensing Lorne's wariness, Danitz raised his hands to indicate that he was unarmed. "I just want to take one more gamble."
Another round of gambling? Is this guy really that addicted to gambling, or is it just a simple case of being driven by a competitive spirit...? Lorne frowned slightly as he sized up the other person.
A soft "click" came from the eaves, and Rachi's tail was faintly visible in the moonlight.
He's most likely an extraordinary being; perhaps it's best to stall for time... Lorne narrowed his eyes: "What if I say I don't want to play?"
Danitz's smile froze for a moment: "That's a real shame. After all, the area isn't very safe, and outsiders can easily... get into trouble."
Threatening me... um... that doesn't seem like it. Even if he is an extraordinary being, he shouldn't be so powerful that I can't handle him at all.
Is it just a test?
Lorne stared at the other person for a few seconds, then gave a look of resignation: "Okay, you win."
"Let's play one more round."
"But this time we're not playing cards, how about flipping a coin?"
If I want to play cards, I have to go back to the previous casino or find another place. I'm unfamiliar with the area, so I can't go with the other party.
It's best to settle the betting situation on the spot.
He pulled a coin from his pocket, its surface gleaming coldly in the moonlight. "Here's what we'll do: you toss it, and we'll settle this in one round."
Danitz was visibly taken aback: "It's that simple?"
"The simpler the game, the more it tests your luck. What, you're afraid?" Lorne mimicked Danitz's previous tone.
"Just kidding." Danitz grabbed the coin, rubbing the king's portrait on it with his fingertips. "What are we betting on?"
"What do you want to bet on?" Lorne asked slowly.
"I want to know how you won at the poker table before," Danitz said, staring into Lorne's eyes.
How did you win? How else could you win? The first few rounds were about luck, the last round was about fighting evil, and that was because you made a stupid mistake.
Lorne sighed. "Let's bet in pounds instead."
"If you win, I'll give you back the 50 pounds I just won from you."
"If I win, we'll pretend we never met, okay?"
Danitz gave a "I knew it" look. In his opinion, the young man in front of him was just a newbie who relied on his cleverness to get by in the casino.
Even so, he was a very self-aware rookie and had the potential to be a subordinate.
Danitz nodded slightly and smiled, "I appreciate your attitude."
He tossed the coin high into the air, the metal tracing a bright arc through the air.
"Heads!" he shouted.
Lorne didn't speak, but simply shook his head slightly.
"number."
The coin spun in the water, eventually revealing a pattern with the numbers facing up.
Lorne nodded slightly... With the "machine's" spiritual intuition, guessing a coin toss was a piece of cake.
"Okay, sir, as I just said, we haven't met today. Goodbye."
After saying that, Lorne walked in the opposite direction, not wanting to stay for even a moment longer.
"Wait!" Danitz stopped him.
"Your personality matches my aesthetic preferences. Would you be interested in joining us?"
"Join you?" Lorne paused. This turn of events was completely unexpected.
"That's right. Judging from your appearance, you must be here to make your way in the sea. As an outsider, it's going to be hard for you to make a name for yourself." Danitz approached, tossing a coin. "A newbie without any connections, even the prostitutes in the port will try to extort you."
He suddenly lowered his voice:
"But once you join us, you won't have to worry about this at all."
"So, you have a very powerful background?" Lorne suddenly became interested and showed a very interested expression.
After all, he originally came to sea in search of opportunities.
"Of course." Danitz was satisfied with Lorne's reaction and continued with a smile:
"Since you've come to the sea, you must be dreaming of treasure. We are a group of partners who have come together to find treasure."
"Are you adventurers or bounty hunters?" These were the two professions that Lorne immediately thought of upon hearing Dani's description.
"No, to be honest, we're a gang of pirates..."
Pirates? The kind with bounties… Lorne’s expression suddenly changed as he looked at Danitz.
Just as Danitz was speaking eloquently, on the roof behind him, Lachi concealed his murderous aura, his amber pupils shrinking into thin lines in the darkness.
