Chapter 10 Forbidden Knowledge and Speculation
Chapter 10 Forbidden Knowledge and Speculation
As the steam train started moving, Lorne's tense nerves gradually relaxed.
"That silver-haired woman told me to go see her tomorrow night. By then, the train should have reached its final stop. She probably won't be able to find me after traveling so far, right?" Lorne thought uncertainly.
"I wonder what Mrs. Griffin will do. She's so confident, nothing should happen to her, right?"
"Awoo!"
Seemingly sensing the abnormal movement around them, the orange cat inside the bag began to struggle.
"Quiet down, I'll let you out when we get to the station." Lorne soothed the orange cat, and even stuffed the ham he had brought along as dry food into his bag, which finally calmed it down.
After calming himself down, Lorne took out the materials he had bought at a high price that day and began to study them.
Lorne first took out two pages of Russell's diary.
"On December 16th, we made contact again with that poor fellow who was trapped deep in the storm and lost in the darkness."
"He called himself Mr. 'The Door' and tried to teach me a complicated and difficult ritual to help him return to the real world, promising to grant me three requests."
"Does he think I'm stupid? I've lived for over sixty years across two lifetimes, don't I realize this is the usual tactic of evil gods and demons?"
"But his descriptions of some of the history of the Quaternary period are really interesting."
"This page contains a lot of information. Mr. 'Door' sounds quite impressive. According to the diary, he was sealed away?"
"But this information is useless to me! Can't you give me something more practical?"
Although this page contained a lot of useful information, it was still too advanced for Lorne, so he turned to another page.
This page is very short, with only two sentences.
"On October 26th, Miss Solante made me feel young again."
On October 28th, I knew that Duke Lotte was eavesdropping in the next room, and to be honest, the feeling wasn't too bad.
Is he really that shameless...? Lorne raised his hand to his forehead. Although it was clear from the fact that Emperor Roselle plagiarized everywhere that he was not a decent person, Lorne still held a sliver of hope for this transmigrator predecessor.
But now...
"Nothing more explosive should happen, right?" Lorne thought uncertainly.
"By the way, the previous page said he regretted not choosing the paths of 'diviner,' 'apprentice,' and 'thief.' Is there something special about these three paths?"
"Damn it, if only I had seen this page of the diary sooner. Once you choose a path, you can't change it, this is so unfair!" Lorne was already dissatisfied with the 'monster' path, and seeing the contents of Roselle's diary made him even more unhappy.
"I was just too impatient!" Lorne sighed.
Setting aside his unpleasant feelings for the time being, Lorne took out the knowledge he had bought from the "Eye of Wisdom" and began to look through it.
"Sequence 9 is an extraordinary starting point, the beginning of the path it belongs to, and so on, each time it is upgraded, it will be upgraded by one sequence."
Once a path is chosen, there is no going back; taking potions through a different path will lead to unimaginable and terrible consequences.
Furthermore, advancement is a gradual process, and taking potions across different sequences will lead to loss of control or even death.
... "
These are indeed some basic but practical pieces of knowledge. Lorne commented in his mind.
There was some other information about mysticism, but Lorne didn't look at it. He needed to calm his mind and digest what was in his head first.
"Since each promotion moves you up a rank, resulting in ranks 9 and 8, what happens when you go up further?"
Up to sequence 1? Or is there more after sequence 1?
Becoming a god? Does that mean gods are also extraordinary beings?
A blasphemous thought popped into Lorne's mind.
"Let's make a bold assumption: what if the Seven Gods were also extraordinary beings?"
"Ha, such a crazy idea. If those fanatics knew about it, they'd beat me to death," Lorne chuckled self-deprecatingly.
"No, I can't let the universal values of this world disrupt my thinking."
"Based on this assumption, if extraordinary individuals can become gods simply by advancing in rank, wouldn't gods be everywhere?"
But in reality, there isn't, so there must be some limitations. Is it that it gets harder the higher you go? Or is it because this world doesn't support it, like the so-called Qi refining—is the world's spiritual energy only enough to support a limited number of people to become gods?
There are also classifications of various pathways...
Is it because the higher you go, the fewer materials there are, and a single path can only support one god?
Furthermore, the number of extraordinary individuals in this world is not large, so if we exclude the possibility that someone can control the number of extraordinary individuals...
However, the humans in this world did not develop in the direction of advanced martial arts.
Lorne frowned, feeling as if he had discovered something.
"This line of thinking might explain why the quantity of those extraordinary materials is limited, or why production cannot keep up with consumption."
But regardless of the method, if the time frame is extended, it will inevitably lead to the loss of extraordinary power.
Of course, it's not impossible that high-sequence individuals can live for a very long time, and even live as long as the heavens.
However, if a high-sequence extraordinary individual dies unexpectedly, the material for this pathway will be unavailable, and low-sequence individuals will not be able to advance. Eventually, this pathway will disappear.
Unless, unless extraordinary can be inherited!
In this way, even if there are no more natural materials, this route will not be interrupted.
There are also gods, but they are quite different from the gods of the original world.
They each represent a specific field; for example, the Lord of Storms represents the ocean, the Goddess of Night represents peace, and the God of Steam and Machinery should represent technology.
Does this mean that God represents a certain concept itself?
A concept is unique, therefore there can only be one.
Lorne recalled the knowledge in his memory, and suddenly a flash of inspiration struck him.
"Wait a minute, historically Roselle has always had close ties with the Steam Church, so the path he was in was most likely also within the Steam Church."
"As a time traveler, I don't believe he didn't want to become a god, but he didn't, and the seven gods didn't become eight gods."
"Does that mean that with the existence of a god of steam and machinery, he can no longer advance in rank?"
"And does Roselle's regret at not choosing the paths of 'diviner,' 'apprentice,' and 'thief' suggest that these three paths did not yet have a god, thus offering the opportunity to become a god?"
"Wouldn't that be an even bigger loss?"
Following this line of thought, Lorne felt even more that he had made a huge mistake, choosing monsters instead of the three more promising paths.
"It seems that once the path is chosen, there's no going back. Even Roselle couldn't successfully switch paths. He was Julius Caesar, after all! He had so many resources and still couldn't do it."
Lorne looked up at the window, intending to look at the scenery to change his mood, but after seeing the crimson moon, Lorne did not feel calm, but rather a little more agitated.
It's completely different from the world I knew, a different era, a different landscape, a different moon.
Coupled with the blasphemous thoughts swirling in his mind, Lorne felt like he had truly become a monster, a monster completely out of place in this world.
