Chapter 28 Telephone
Chapter 28 Telephone
The voice sounded very similar, but because Su Zixu had just called him, he dared not believe it easily.
Old Zeng didn't believe that Su Zixu would come down to the basement level knowing it was haunted.
He had no connection with Su Zixu, and Lao Zeng didn't believe Su Zixu would risk his life to save him.
Even elderly people who have entered the brain multiple times would not take the risk, let alone someone who is a newcomer.
Not to mention their lack of experience, their adaptability is certainly inferior to that of more experienced elderly people.
In short, considering all the factors combined, Lao Zeng is now 90% certain that the Su Zixu in front of him is most likely a ghost.
Even when facing a ghost, Old Zeng's nerves were on edge; he wasn't entirely confident he could escape unscathed.
Although he had entered the brain region twice before, Lao Zeng felt that the difficulty of those two times could not compare to this one.
As he thought about it, his heart started to beat faster, but it seemed that what he feared most was exactly what was going to happen.
By the light inside the elevator, he saw "Su Zixu" squinting and opening his eyes wide as he stepped out of the elevator, groping around with his hands in front of him.
It looked like the person had poor vision and couldn't see their surroundings clearly, yet they skillfully avoided the obstacles around them.
His head turned around, as if he were searching for him, but the direction he walked was right at the workstation where he was currently.
Old Zeng shrank back even further, completely disappearing into the darkness. It seemed that this concealed his presence and gave him a sense of security.
Old Zeng's brows furrowed instantly, and cold sweat broke out on his forehead. He didn't believe it was a coincidence; the other party must have some method to lock onto him, but he didn't yet know why he had been locked onto.
Fortunately, his opponent wasn't moving very fast, which gave him time to think and room to act.
However, Su Zixu's every step was precisely on the path leading to him, so he didn't have much time left.
Before he could figure out the conditions under which the other party targeted him and their method of killing him, the ever-approaching sense of oppression made Lao Zeng somewhat panicked.
At this rate, the other person will arrive at his workstation in less than two minutes.
He dared not think about what would happen next, nor did he want to.
Seeing that staying here would only mean certain death, Lao Zeng decided not to stay any longer and began to wander between the surrounding workstations.
He first did a backflip and moved under the table diagonally behind him. But to Lao Zeng's surprise, after he changed his position, "Su Zixu" also changed his route and walked towards him again.
This scene made Lao Zeng frown slightly. Lao Zeng was confident in his skills, as his movement had not made a sound.
He didn't know how the ghost had locked onto him, but he didn't dare to stop and continued moving to create distance between himself and "Su Zixu".
After changing positions four times, Old Zeng realized that "Su Zixu" was moving with him the whole time. A cold aura emanating from him was constantly clinging to Old Zeng, making him feel extremely uncomfortable.
What's even more troublesome is that Lao Zeng noticed that "Su Zixu" was moving much faster now than when he first came in.
The distance between the two did not increase; instead, it became closer, about two or three workstations apart.
"Tap, tap, tap, tap..."
The footsteps followed him like a leech, each step seeming to count down the days of Old Zeng's life.
He still called out "Su Zixu" every now and then, but this time, his tone revealed a hint of impatience.
"call--"
Taking a deep breath and slowly exhaling, Lao Zeng forced himself to calm down. He knew that the more chaotic the situation, the less he should panic, because panic would lead to chaos, and chaos would lead to unforeseen changes.
Suppressing his fear, Lao Zeng began planning his next move once again.
He had already circled around to the leftmost row of workstations against the wall in the office area, and was in the third row.
There was an open space in front of the first row, with no obstructions and an unobstructed view.
At this moment, "Su Zixu" was two workstations diagonally behind him.
Judging from the current situation, if he can't come up with a solution, then there's no doubt that when he hides in the last workstation, that will be his death day.
Old Zeng peeked out slightly, and to his surprise, "Su Zixu" actually stopped this time.
"Zeng Xiang, where are you? I can't find you."
Su Zixu slowly raised his head, stood still, and then began to mutter, "It's too dark here, I can't see anything."
At this moment, the scene before him seemed extremely bizarre to Lao Zeng.
He saw "Su Zixu" spinning around in circles like a headless fly, calling out to him as he went.
Taking advantage of the moment when "Su Zixu" lost his sense of direction, Lao Zeng quickly got up and rushed towards the elevator.
He moved nimbly and silently, and the whole process went surprisingly smoothly. He arrived at the elevator without much effort.
Old Zeng excitedly raised his hand to press the up button, but just as his fingertips touched the button, he looked at the numbers displayed on the screen and his hand froze in mid-air.
The numbers showed that the elevator was on the basement level. As long as he pressed the button and entered the elevator, he could leave this awful place.
But... is it really that simple?
If this is all it takes to escape, then all the things this ghost did before seem meaningless.
Moreover, the real Su Zixu had already taken the elevator upstairs, and it seems that he did not come to the basement as he had expected.
Therefore, the elevator is most likely not stopped on the basement level. In other words, the elevator is an illusion.
Following this idea, Lao Zeng carefully recalled the events and realized that everything had indeed gone too smoothly.
He ran from his workstation to the elevator without encountering any obstacles along the way.
It's like... the ghost actually wanted him to get into the elevator.
After much internal struggle, Lao Zeng finally gave up the idea of leaving.
He crouched down and returned to the office area.
This time, however, he chose to hide under the third row of workstations on the right.
From this position, he could both control the distance between himself and "Su Zixu" and make it convenient for him to observe.
Old Zeng crouched down, hiding himself under the table, and then slowly moved closer to "Su Zixu".
He had been running away the whole time and hadn't had time to observe the ghost, but now he had to take a risk.
He moved slowly and carefully, each movement like a slow-motion scene.
But the unexpected still happened—just as Lao Zeng crawled out from under the table and was moving towards the next workstation.
His foot accidentally hooked onto the leg of the swivel chair, causing the chair to move. The back of the chair spun around and hit the edge of the table with a dull thud, accompanied by a scraping sound.
Old Zeng's palms suddenly became sweaty, and his heart began to race.
Just then, Su Zixu, who had been spinning in circles, suddenly stopped.
Its body was slightly tilted, facing away from Lao Zeng at a 45-degree angle, and the calls it made abruptly stopped.
Old Zeng stared wide-eyed at "Su Zixu's" head, which was hanging low to his chest, and was now slowly turning towards him at an angle that no living person could possibly turn.
Then he slowly lifted it up, his movements stiff and strange.
"Finally...finally, I've found you."
Su Zixu's eyes bulged outwards, slowly and eerily rotating. His mouth stretched to his ears, emitting a chilling laugh that sounded childish yet distorted.
