I unexpectedly acquired 50 speed points from the jockey who had just died Megumi McQueen.
Everything else seems to have remained unchanged.
Just as Yuuki Takada and his group were about to leave the Donghuang Racecourse, a slightly hurried voice sounded from the side:
"Hey...wait a minute, bro, please wait a moment."
"Hey bro, come here for a second. I have something I'd like to discuss with you." Takada Yuki and Sato Miwako both stopped and looked in the direction of the voice.
A middle-aged man wearing a wrinkled Brazilian suit, with somewhat disheveled hair, but whose eyes held a hint of urgency and self-assurance, strode over. It was none other than Kogoro Mouri.
"Phew... I finally made it." Kogoro Mouri took a breath, stood up in front of them, puffed out his chest, and tried to appear more professional. "I am Kogoro Mouri, from Beika Town, Tokyo, and I am a detective."
"I was there just now and saw how decisive and efficient you two were; you're both incredibly skilled!"
Kogoro Mouri rubbed his hands together, a smile spreading across his face, but his eyes involuntarily drifted towards the heavily guarded crime scene in the distance, and he guessed:
"Judging from your identification, you must be colleagues from the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, right? What a coincidence! I just came to Kyoto from Tokyo to bet on horse racing... oh no, to handle some personal business."
Kogoro Mouri paused, then leaned closer, lowered his voice, and said in a gentle tone, "You see, there's such a tricky case happening here. I've heard that the security situation in Kyoto Prefecture has always been..."
"...Uh...this doesn't look good. We're all from Tokyo, so why don't we travel together? That way we can look out for each other on the way! And..."
He straightened his back and confidently patted his chest. "With my experience as 'Detective Kogoro Mouri,' I might be able to offer you two some unique insights to help solve the case! It's better than handing all the cases over to those...slowpokes, right?"
Yuuki Takada looked at the man in front of him who called himself a "detective".
There was indeed a strong curiosity about the case and a desire to prove himself in the other person's eyes.
But his slightly flushed cheeks, his ill-fitting tie, and the disdain he showed for the Kyoto Prefectural Police in his words, along with his boastful attitude that clearly did not match his own abilities, were all signs of something else.
Yuuki Takada immediately deduced that this was a private detective who was still quite inexperienced in the field of reasoning, relied more on intuition and luck than rigorous logic, and even had a bit of cleverness, and was currently trying his best to seize the opportunity to participate in major cases to enhance his reputation.
Miwako Sato clearly made a similar judgment; she maintained a polite but distant smile and did not respond.
Yuuki Takada's expression remained calm and composed, his voice steady and carrying a serious, official tone: "Mr. Mori, thank you for your kind offer. However, the investigation has been officially transferred to the Kyoto Prefectural Police Headquarters, and Inspector Akimoto will be fully responsible for it."
“As members of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, we have no right to intervene in the investigation procedures of local police departments without authorization.”
He deliberately emphasized the words "formal handover" and "no right to intervene".
Chapter 47 Kogoro Mouri's Invitation
"As for traveling back to Tokyo together..." Takada Yuki suddenly said, his tone softening but his stance firm, "We still have follow-up official reports to prepare, and our itinerary is already set, so it is inconvenient for us to travel together. Mr. Mori, please make your own way."
His refusal was swift and decisive, leaving Kogoro Mouri no room for further entanglement.
After saying that, Yuuki Takada nodded slightly to Kogoro Mouri, then turned around without hesitation and walked steadily and quickly toward the exit.
The lightness brought by the speed of 130 points made his movements appear exceptionally smooth and natural.
Miwako Sato followed immediately, leaving Kogoro Mouri with only a polite and professional nod and a brief "Excuse me."
"Eh? Wait!"
"Inspector Takada! Officer Sato! Please reconsider!"
“More helpers mean more strength! I know Tokyo very well! Hey…” Kogoro Mouri reluctantly reached out his hand, wanting to try again, but Yuki Takada and the others had already blended into the departing crowd without stopping.
"Tsk..." Kogoro Mouri reluctantly lowered his hand, looking in the direction where the two had disappeared, his face filled with frustration at being rejected and a hint of barely perceptible embarrassment.
He scratched his already messy hair in frustration.
"What... the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department thinks they're so great? What kind of airs are they putting on..."
"Hmph, but even if you leave first, I'll still know where you are. After all, there's only one Shinkansen train left to get back to Tokyo at this hour!"
He kept muttering to himself, but his gaze kept drifting back to the finish line, which was surrounded by heavy police tape.
His eyes held a mixture of resentment and curiosity, as well as disappointment at not being recognized as a "detective."
Although he is currently only handling cases involving stray cats and other similar jobs, the fees he receives are barely enough for his own use. He can only rely on his "intuition" to try his luck.
Kogoro Mouri straightened his suit, cleared his throat, and decided to head to the Tokyo Shinkansen station first.
Meanwhile, Yuki Takada and Miwako Sato quickly boarded the Shinkansen back to Tokyo.
The carriage was relatively quiet.
"That Mori detective... seems very enthusiastic, I feel like I've seen him somewhere before." Sato Miwako said casually, looking at the scenery rushing past the window, her tone neither praising nor criticizing.
Yuuki Takada leaned back in his chair, closed his eyes to rest, and felt a faint electric current in his mind as he counted the speed of "130".
“He has plenty of enthusiasm, but lacks the right methods. He’s still a long way from success.” Yuki Takada replied calmly, a picture of Kogoro Mouri’s eager yet slightly flamboyant demeanor flashing through his mind. “Without the person behind him, I’m afraid Mr. Mouri wouldn’t have achieved such great success anytime soon.”
He refocused his attention on the flashing panel deep within his consciousness.
An unexpected gain from a speed of 50 points... This trip to Kyoto, apart from this bizarre murder case, doesn't seem to have been entirely fruitless.
It's just unknown at what point in the future this new "speed" will come in handy.
As for the cause of the jockey's death, and what answer the Kyoto Prefectural Police would ultimately give, these were no longer their priority at the moment.
The Shinkansen traveled smoothly on the tracks, and the carriages were filled with the quiet atmosphere unique to the journey.
Yuuki Takada closed his eyes to rest, his consciousness sinking into that shimmering area, feeling the lightness brought by the speed of 130 points, almost integrated into his breath.
Miwako Sato flipped through the summary of the preliminary report provided by the Kyoto Prefectural Police, her brows furrowed slightly, as if she were deep in thought.
Suddenly, a voice, deliberately lowered but still carrying a somewhat familiar tone, rang out from not far away:
"Oh, this... miss, is this seat taken?"
"It looks empty to me..."
Yuki Takada didn't even lift his eyelids, but his senses had already picked up on the source of the sound and the slightly hurried footsteps.
Sato Miwako raised her head, a hint of understanding and helplessness flashing in her eyes.
Standing in the aisle was none other than Kogoro Mouri.
He held a train ticket in one hand and awkwardly adjusted his tie with the other, trying to make himself look like an ordinary passenger who had "just happened" to buy a seat next to him.
However, his slightly stiff smile and the way he deliberately avoided looking in Takada Yuki's direction had already given him away.
"Mr. Mori?" Miwako Sato asked politely, her tone calm and even. "Are you also taking this train back to Tokyo?"
"Ah! Officer Sato!"
"Yes... what a coincidence!"
Kogoro Mouri acted as if he had just noticed them, making an exaggerated expression of surprise, and then sat down in the empty seat diagonally in front of Miwako Sato, just across the aisle from Yuki Takada.
"Yes, yes, something urgent suddenly came up in Tokyo. I never expected to be on the same train as two police officers. What a coincidence! What a coincidence!"
Yuki Takada slowly opened his eyes, his gaze calmly falling on Kogoro Mouri.
That gaze held no surprise, no blame, and not even much emotion; it was pure observation. Yet, it made Kogoro Mori feel an invisible pressure, wondering if his carefully planned "chance encounter" had been seen through at a glance.
Kogoro Mouri instinctively straightened his back.
"Mr. Mori..."
Yuuki Takada spoke, his voice low but clear enough to reach Kogoro Mouri's ears, his tone remarkably calm, "We came to Kyoto for a much-needed rest, and it was wrong of us to lie to you before. However..."
“The Kyoto Prefectural Police’s investigation has its own procedures and rules, and the involvement of unrelated personnel will only create more chaos. I hope you can understand.”
“We’re just strangers; we’ll only be getting in the way of the police. I just hope you’ll listen to my advice.”
This straightforward apology was something Kogoro Mouri hadn't expected.
However, what he said next made Kogoro Mouri's smile freeze instantly, and embarrassment quickly spread.
He opened his mouth, wanting to say something in his defense, but under Takada's all-knowing gaze, his words seemed particularly pale and powerless.
"Hmph!" In the end, Kogoro Mouri could only snort sullenly, turn his head to look at the scenery rushing past the window, and mutter to himself, "I just wanted to provide the police with some clues so I could get some reward, is that so hard?"
A subtle silence fell over the carriage.
Miwako Sato sighed softly and continued reading the report.
Yuki Takada closed his eyes again, as if the little incident had never happened.
Only his senses, sharper than most, could clearly detect the faint breathing sounds coming from Kogoro Mouri's direction, filled with deep resentment and frustration.
Kogoro Mouri was on pins and needles.
I had hoped to be on good terms with them, see if I could get some cases from the police, help them solve them, and earn some reward.
But I don't know if Inspector Takada has a problem with me, or what.
I've always been on guard against myself...
Chapter 48 Heading to the Detective Agency
Soon, the Shinkansen train arrived at Tokyo Station.
As soon as the car door opened, Yuki Takada and Miwako Sato stood up nimbly without pausing and joined the flow of people getting off the car.
"Inspector Takada! Officer Sato! Wait..." Kogoro Mouri hurriedly grabbed his small travel bag and caught up with him:
"If I'm not mistaken, the reason you two came to the Kyoto Higashikage Racecourse today is because Inspector Megure gave you the tickets, right?"
Hearing those words from behind, Yuuki Takada unconsciously stopped and turned to look at Kogoro Mouri.
"You mean the ticket Inspector Megure has, you gave it to him?" Yuuki Takada turned and glanced at him before asking.
Kogoro Mouri nodded, scratched his head, and smiled: "Originally, I gave him those two tickets because I was thinking of inviting Inspector Megure and his wife to come along."
"Who would have thought that he would give the tickets to the two of you in the end?"
