"What's wrong?" Steve, who was walking ahead, noticed his unusual behavior, immediately stopped, and turned around warily to ask.
Chu Hang did not answer him. Instead, he stiffly and slowly turned around, pointing his ear towards the direction from which the sound came, holding his breath, and listening with all his might.
The sounds of wind, snow, and flames, and the hissing of scorching metal hitting ice and snow in the distance...
Then, amidst all this noise, that voice once again entered his ears with unparalleled clarity.
This wasn't his heartbeat, nor was it the echo of an explosion!
It was the beating of that enormous heart he had seen in the underground laboratory!
It survived such a violent and complete explosion and collapse!
Moreover, the heartbeat was more steady and powerful than he had heard before, each beat seemed to shake the earth, filled with a kind of... wildness and savagery of breaking free from constraints.
A chilling coldness shot from his tailbone to the top of his head, making the hairs on his body stand on end. His body began to tremble slightly and uncontrollably.
"It...it's still alive..."
In a hoarse voice, almost dreamlike and unfamiliar even to himself, Chu Hang spoke to Steve and Logan, whose faces were full of doubt, about a fact that could plunge anyone into utter despair.
"That monster... isn't dead..."
Chapter 32 How do you fight this thing?
Chu Hang's words, though not spoken loudly, sounded like a tolling death knell in the deathly silence of the snow-covered landscape.
The expressions on Steve and Logan's faces froze for a moment.
Logan's brow, which had just relaxed due to the mission's success, furrowed again. He first glanced at Chu Hang in disbelief, then turned abruptly, like a lone wolf trying to catch the scent of its prey in the wind, listening intently to the direction of the ruins.
Steve reacted even faster. He didn't listen, because he knew Chu Hang's hearing was far superior to his own. He simply stared intently into Chu Hang's eyes, where the nascent flame of hope was being replaced by icy astonishment.
"Are you sure?" His voice was very low, each word seemingly squeezed out from between his teeth.
Chu Hang did not answer, but swallowed hard and nodded emphatically.
He was absolutely certain. The heartbeat was like a giant diesel engine running at full power—heavy, powerful, and brimming with an untamed vitality. It echoed in his mind, each beat sending a sharp jolt through his heart. It wasn't just alive; it sounded… even stronger than before.
Logan had clearly caught a glimpse of something amiss, perhaps not from the sound, but from some kind of animalistic instinct. He slowly straightened up, the ferocity of a beast rising in his face once more. He grinned, revealing a set of white teeth, and growled in a low voice, "Good, very good! Saves me the trouble of going looking for it again!"
This guy is insane. Shouldn't a normal person's first reaction to hearing this kind of news be to run? Instead, he gets excited.
But it was Steve's reaction that truly made Chu Hang realize the seriousness of the situation. He wasn't angry or belligerent like Logan, nor was he fearful like Chu Hang. He simply took a deep breath, and that breath of air, mixed with gunpowder smoke and icy snow, seemed to instantly make his eyes as cold and sharp as a scalpel.
"let's go!"
Without the slightest hesitation, he uttered those three words and turned to sprint towards the designated rendezvous point number three. His decisiveness made it seem as if the pursuers weren't some invincible monster, but merely a regular blizzard. This calmness was even more alarming to Chu Hang than Logan's ferocity. It meant that, in the judgment of this battle-hardened super soldier, the three of them combined had zero chance of defeating that monster.
The only option was to run.
Logan seemed to want to say something, but seeing Steve's unwavering back, he could only spit in resentment and follow closely behind. Chu Hang, of course, dared not delay and took off to catch up.
The three of them ran wildly through the snow, none of them speaking. Chu Hang focused all his attention on listening, trying to catch the monster's movements.
The heartbeat grew clearer and louder. Thump...thump...thump...
Then, a teeth-grinding, heavy grinding sound broke in. It was the sound of countless tons of steel and concrete squeezing and crushing against each other.
It's coming out!
The thought had barely crossed Chu Hang's mind when a deafening roar suddenly erupted from the center of the burning ruins behind them!
The sound was completely different from the previous explosions; it was more muffled and penetrating, as if something incredibly heavy had forcefully shattered the earth's crust from the depths of the earth's core!
The three of them turned around at the same time.
In the center of that sea of fire, the mountain of burning steel ruins surged upwards like an activated volcano! Countless burning debris were pushed to both sides by an unimaginable force, like waves parted by giant ships.
Immediately afterwards, a huge, indescribable black shadow slowly and irresistibly rose from the destruction and flames.
It was still the same body stitched together from pale flesh and cold machinery, but it looked a hundred times more terrifying than what they had seen in the basement.
The intense heat of the explosion charred its fleshy outer layer, turning it into cracked pieces of charcoal. But beneath those charred cracks, a dark red, magma-like glow shone through, as if its veins no longer flowed with blood, but with molten lava. The metal supports that had originally served only as structural bracing were now completely fused together with the twisted steel bars, armor plates, pipes, and other debris from the factory explosion in a grotesque and terrifying manner. Its size had increased by at least two sizes, resembling a moving mountain of flesh and steel.
What sent chills down Chu Hang's spine was its "head." The already deformed and terrifying head was now half-replaced by a massive, red-hot turbine engine. The turbine was still slowly turning, emitting a low whirring sound, and the scorching air it spewed out distorted the surrounding air.
This is no longer a biological weapon. It is a war behemoth that crawled out of hell, with bones of steel and blood of fire...
"Roar--!"
It raised its head, half flesh and half machine, and let out a roar unlike any other creature. The sound wave, filled with endless pain, rage, and savagery, transformed into a visible shockwave that blew the flames around it to both sides.
Then, its single, enormous eye slowly rotated in the firelight, traversing a distance of nearly a thousand meters, and precisely landed on the three figures as insignificant as ants.
In that instant, Chu Hang felt as if he had been locked onto by a ferocious beast from ancient times. A primal fear, originating from the depths of his genes, instantly gripped his heart, making it almost impossible for him to breathe.
Run! Don't look back!
Steve's roar was like a heavy hammer blow to the back of Chu Hang's head, waking him from the almost frozen fear.
Chu Hang snapped out of his daze, took another step, and followed in his footsteps. He dared not look back again; he feared that if he glanced back, he would completely lose all courage to escape. They ran even faster, each step in the knee-deep snow requiring every ounce of strength. The powerful stamina granted by the Super Soldier Serum was being pushed to its absolute limit at this moment.
But it didn't work.
He could clearly hear the monster move after a brief pause.
Thump... Crack... Boom...
Its lower body, fused together from countless scrap metal, resembled a runaway, gigantic sledgehammer, and began to move toward them at a desperate pace. With each step it took, the earth trembled, and its massive form crushed the burning ruins with thunderous roars.
Its speed was actually faster than theirs!
"Captain! It's catching up! Soon!" Chu Hang shouted hoarsely to Steve ahead as he ran.
“I know!” Steve yelled without turning around. “Get over that ridge ahead! Use the terrain to shake it off!”
The ridge was at least 400 meters away from them. The monster, however, was less than 800 meters away, and that distance was rapidly closing!
Chu Hang felt a chill run through him. He couldn't outrun them, there was no way he could!
"This can't go on!" Logan's voice also carried a hint of impatience. "It will catch up with us like a rabbit and then trample us into mincemeat! Someone has to hold it off!"
As he spoke, he slowed down and turned to rush towards the monster.
"Come back!" Steve stopped abruptly, grabbing Logan's arm, his eyes sharp as knives. "Your claws can't hurt it! Going up there is just suicide! Execute orders!"
“No buts!” Steve’s tone left no room for argument. “Our mission is to rendezvous with Dugan and the others, and get everyone out of here! It would be meaningless if any one of us died here!”
Logan's chest heaved violently as he stared intently at the approaching behemoth, his eyes blazing with resentment and rage. But in the end, he gritted his teeth, turned around, and continued running after Steve.
Chu Hang knew Steve was right. In the face of absolute power, fearless courage is no different from suicide.
But reason is reason, and despair is despair. He could clearly hear that with each "step" of the monster, the ground trembled more violently. He could even feel the scorching heat emanating from it slapping against his back.
It's getting closer, so close!
Just when Chu Hang felt he was about to give up, Steve suddenly spoke again. His voice remained remarkably steady even as he ran, full of strong logic and command.
"Chu! Listen! Don't just listen to its footsteps! Listen to its body structure! Where are its weaknesses? Its joints! Its energy core! Anything that sounds different from its main structure!"
One sentence was enough to enlighten Chu Hang.
That's right! He was so busy being scared that he forgot that his hearing was their greatest asset right now!
He forced himself to calm down, expelling all fear and distracting thoughts from his mind, and like a precision instrument, focused all his senses on the enormous thing behind him.
The sound of a heartbeat... This is its biological core, protected by thick flesh and armor. It sounds incredibly dull, offering no opportunity to strike.
The sound of metal scraping... that's the sound it makes when it moves, permeating its entire body, making it impossible to distinguish.
Amidst the cacophony, he detected a distinct sound: a high-frequency, electric-like buzzing. It didn't originate from the heart-like biological core, nor from the half-turbo engine head, but rather…from its back!
On its upper back, there's a spot where the sound is completely different from the rest. The sound there is clearer and sharper, as if a powerful energy is circulating at high speed within a relatively fragile container.
"Its back!" Chu Hang shouted immediately, "There's a strange sound coming from the upper part of its back! It sounds like...like some kind of energy core! The sound there is much weaker than the heartbeat in its chest!"
Steve's eyes suddenly lit up.
"Well done!" he roared, quickening his pace even further. "Logan! Did you hear that? Its weakness is in its back!"
"I heard it!" Logan's voice was filled with barely suppressed excitement. "But how do we get around to its back?"
Yeah, how do they get around to its back? They're having a hard time even escaping from the front, let alone from behind.
Just then, they finally reached the foot of the ridge. It was a steep slope of nearly seventy degrees, covered with thick snow and ice.
Steve didn't even look, he just hurled the vibranium shield. With a clang, the shield embedded itself firmly in a crevice in the rocks halfway up the mountain. He grabbed the straps connecting the shield, roared, and swung like a pendulum up the ridge.
While in mid-air, he still had the strength to swing the other end of the belt towards them.
Logan caught it, and without a word, his bone claws shot out, piercing the ice wall, and he began to climb upwards using both hands and feet. Chu Hang followed suit, using the entrenching tool at his waist as an ice axe, and desperately climbed upwards. The three of them, like three agile geckos, climbed the steep mountain wall at top speed.
The monster chased them down the ridge.
It looked at them, seemingly stunned for a moment. Its enormous body was simply incapable of climbing the steep mountain wall.
Just as a glimmer of hope rose in Chu Hang's heart, it turned into an icy chill the next second.
The monster slowly raised its enormous claw, which was made up of countless metal parts and pipes and resembled a battering ram.
Then, aiming a punch at the mountain wall they were climbing, he delivered a powerful blow!
"boom--!"
The entire mountain ridge shook violently, as if it had been hit head-on by a heavy bomb.
Chu Hang felt a tremendous force coming from the mountain, almost shaking him off the ice wall. Countless ice blocks and rocks rained down on them like a storm.
"Hurry! Get up there!" Steve shouted from the top.
They gritted their teeth, braved falling rocks, and struggled upwards.
The monster punched again!
This time, where it struck, a huge crack appeared, spreading rapidly upwards like a black lightning bolt. He watched helplessly as the crack, starting just meters from his feet, stretched all the way up to above Steve!
"Captain! Be careful!"
Before Chu Hang could finish speaking, a boulder the size of a truck above Steve's head, loosened by a landslide, suddenly crashed down on him with tremendous force!
Chapter 33 Ace
The moment the giant rock detached from the mountain, it was as if the world had been muted.
