"He has to be ready!" Hank whirled around, staring intently at the tiny figure in the terrarium, his voice a command, yet also a plea. "Scott! Listen! Plans are on track! You only have one chance. Tonight, you must learn to fly!"
Scott's heart sank.
He looked at the flying ant in the distance, which was still leisurely preening its wings, and then at the battle suit gleaming coldly on the computer screen.
This time, it wasn't training. It was real combat.
He took a deep breath and focused all his attention on the flying ant Anthony once again. The hesitation and clumsiness from before were gone from his eyes, replaced by a resolute determination to succeed or die trying.
He conveyed a completely new message to Anthony. This message contained a mixture of "urgency," "danger," "the Queen's supreme command," and a hint of longing to see his daughter that he himself was unaware of, along with a plea.
Anthony, who was preening his wings, felt this unprecedentedly strong will.
It stopped moving, turned its head, and its huge compound eyes locked onto Scott across a distance of tens of meters.
A standoff lasting a few seconds.
