Chapter 58 Mars Tonight...
Chapter 58 Mars Tonight...
Hagrid disliked Filch, especially his habit of threatening and intimidating students, not to mention that he was threatening Harry and Hillon.
So when Hagrid walked over, he immediately waved his hand impatiently, "Your mission is complete. From now on, I'll be in charge."
"I'll be back at dawn to clean up their remains," Filch said harshly, then turned and walked toward the castle.
As soon as he left, Malfoy started complaining, saying he didn't want to go into the woods at all.
But Hagrid ignored him completely, and even when Malfoy brought up his father, the school board chairman, it was no use.
"You can go back now," Hagrid said. "If you think your father would rather you be expelled, then go back to the castle and pack your bags!"
Malfoy didn't move. He glared angrily at Hagrid, but then lowered his gaze and reluctantly followed Hagrid and a black hound into the woods.
"A unicorn has been attacked," Hagrid said gravely. "This is the second time. I found one dead last Wednesday. We need to find it as soon as possible..."
"No, I don't want to go!" Malfoy started to back down again, his voice filled with barely suppressed fear. "What if the thing that hurt the unicorn is still around?"
"As long as you're with me or Tooth, no creature in the Forbidden Forest will harm you," Hagrid said, then went on to give them instructions on what to do next.
Malfoy looked at the dark path behind him and finally gave up on the idea of turning back, grumbling as he followed.
"Relax, just think of it as a camping trip," Xilun said after thinking for a moment, offering him some words of comfort.
There's no need to be afraid. Even in the Forbidden Forest, it's the same. Dumbledore wouldn't just watch his students die, especially since one of them is Harry.
Perhaps the principal is looking this way from his office right now.
Xilun turned his head, his gaze passing through the swaying shadows of the trees, and looked towards the castle in the distance.
Where is the window in the principal's office?
Siren couldn't be found immediately, but what was certain was that the windows at the highest point of the castle were still shining.
"Silen, were you even listening to me?!"
Hagrid's voice brought Siren back to his senses. He nodded and said, "Of course, be careful. Don't act alone, and don't leave your side or Awful's. If you encounter any danger, immediately launch Red Sparks into the sky."
Hagrid was silent for a moment... Did he just go into that much detail?
"That's right, exactly." He nodded. "We'll need to split into two teams later..."
"I want Toothpaste!" This time Malfoy didn't lose focus and said hurriedly.
His expression was resolute, as if he had chosen not a hunting dog, but a fire-breathing dragon.
Siren stared intently at Malfoy, utterly baffled as to which part of his brain had made this decision, that he could think a two-foot-tall hound was safer than an eleven-foot-tall hybrid giant.
Hagrid naturally wouldn't refuse his request.
When they reached the fork in the road, the group split into two.
Siren, Harry, and Hagrid went to one side, while Malfoy, Neville, and Tooth went to the other.
The forbidden forest was quiet at night; even the chirping of insects had disappeared, and the only sound was the rustling of their footsteps on the fallen leaves.
A strange smell filled the air, like grass dripping with morning dew, or like fallen leaves floating in the middle of a deep pool.
Xilun didn't know why he could distinguish the smell of morning dew and fallen leaves, but that was his first reaction.
"This is all unicorn blood." Hagrid looked at the patches of silver-blue blood on the fallen leaves, his face growing increasingly anxious.
"Could it be that a werewolf killed the unicorn?" Harry asked.
"It won't be that fast," Hagrid said. "Unicorns possess powerful magic, and werewolves won't be able to harm them so easily."
Hagrid walked faster and faster, so much so that Harry had to jog to keep up, and neither of them even noticed that one person was missing from their group.
Siren had been following Hagrid, but when they passed a patch of silvery-blue blood, he suddenly stopped and took out the willow branch he used to beat people from his pocket with a puzzled look on his face.
The staff had already been made, and its two sections were covered with intricate magical runes.
But now, one of the runes is flashing with a silvery-blue light, reflecting off the unicorn blood on the ground.
"Wand Core Rune—Contract and Protection," Xiren murmured to himself. "The unicorn is crying for help..."
This is a very ancient rune, and the only one whose function is to protect the staff core.
According to legend, this rune records every staff core it "sees" and resonates magically with it under certain conditions.
As for what constitutes a specific time, according to Garrick Ollivander, it is when the wand is broken, destroyed, or the core is on the verge of extinction.
This is why most wands, once broken, can still be used for a while after being wrapped with a piece of magic tape.
But there's no core in here at all.
There is only one possibility: the unicorn that left this silver-blue bloodstain had its tail hair made into a staff core and recorded in the runes.
Then, when Xilun passed by, the magic of the same origin contained in the unicorn blood was captured by the runes on the staff and a magical resonance was generated.
Having figured this out, Xiren immediately placed the staff flat in his hand, close to the unicorn blood.
In an instant, the runes shone even brighter, and under some subtle magical pull, the staff slowly shifted in a different direction.
Without hesitation, Xilun got up and ran.
Ten minutes later, he caught up with Hagrid and Harry, who were talking to two centaurs.
"Ronan, have you seen a student? He's lost. I have to go back and find him."
The centaur craned his neck, staring intently at the sky. "Mars tonight..."
"Hagrid!" Siren shouted, interrupting their conversation.
"Silen?" Hagrid turned around, exclaiming in surprise, "Thank goodness, where did you go? I've been looking for you..."
"I know where the injured unicorn is," Siren said, running up to him, panting heavily.
"What?"
"There's no time to explain..." Xilun glanced at the increasingly dim silver-blue light on the staff, took a deep breath, and continued running in one direction.
"It's about to die, we must hurry!"
Before he could finish speaking, Xilun had already run far away.
"Stop, Siron! Don't run so fast in the Forbidden Forest, it's dangerous!" Hagrid didn't even think twice before giving chase.
Harry, realizing what was happening, followed closely behind.
In the blink of an eye, only two centaurs remained.
The reddish-brown centaur named Ronan stood frozen, staring blankly in the direction they had gone. After a long while, he seemed to awaken from a dream, slightly opening his mouth and stubbornly and resolutely squeezing out a few words.
