Chapter 154
Chapter 154
Inside is a large courtyard with several buildings, including dormitories, a canteen, and a training hall. The training hall is newly built, with white tiled exterior walls and large windows that allow you to see the wooden floors and basketball hoops inside. Next to it are a track and field stadium, a swimming pool, and a gymnastics hall—everything you could need.
Lin Feng stood in the courtyard, looking at the buildings, and a feeling welled up inside him.
It wasn't nervousness, it wasn't excitement, it was—he belonged here.
Someone came out of the dormitory building and waved to her.
"Lin Feng?"
A young man, in his early twenties, wearing a blue tracksuit from the provincial sports team with the words "Provincial Sports Team" printed on his chest, walked over and looked Lin Feng up and down.
"Coach Li asked me to pick you up. My name is Wang Lei, captain of the provincial youth team."
Lin Feng nodded. "Hello, Brother Wang."
Wang Lei helped him pick up his travel bag and led him inside.
"You'll be staying on the third floor, room 306. You'll be sharing with two teammates. Training starts tomorrow, so rest today and get familiar with the environment."
Lin Feng followed him upstairs.
The dormitory building was old-fashioned, with terrazzo floors and white paint on the walls, though some paint had peeled off, revealing the cement underneath. The hallway smelled of disinfectant mixed with the scent of laundry detergent, and there was also a distinctive smell of sweat—not foul, but a dry, slightly salty odor.
Room 306 wasn't large, with three single beds, three desks, and three wardrobes. The window faced south, offering a view of the track and field. One bed was already made up, neatly folded, with a set of blue training clothes—a T-shirt and shorts—on top.
The other two beds are empty, consisting only of bed boards and mattresses.
Wang Lei placed his travel bag on one of the empty beds.
"You'll be staying in this room. Feel free to use the wardrobe and desk, just don't make a mess of it."
Lin Feng nodded. "Thank you, Brother Wang."
Wang Lei waved his hand. "The cafeteria opens at six o'clock tonight, don't be late. We'll meet at seven tomorrow morning in the training hall. Coach Li will be there."
he's gone.
Lin Feng sat on the bed, looking out the window.
On the track and field, people were running, lap after lap, their steps steady. In the distance, on the rooftop of the swimming pool, several pigeons were pacing, their white plumage reflecting the sunlight.
He took out his pager and looked at it.
No new messages.
He stood up and walked to the public telephone downstairs in the dormitory building.
The payphone had a sign that read: "Local area: 30 cents; Long distance: 80 cents."
He put in eight cents and dialed Cheng Yuxin's number.
The phone rang twice and was answered.
"Feed?"
Cheng Yuxin's voice, though several hundred kilometers away, was slightly distorted, but it was still her voice.
"Sister Yuxin, I've arrived."
There was a moment of silence on the other end of the phone.
"It's good that we've arrived. Have you eaten?"
"Not yet. Dinner will be served at six."
"Then go eat something. Don't go hungry."
"Um."
silence.
"Sister Yuxin."
"Um?"
"Has it rained in Beichuan?"
"No. It's sunny."
Lin Feng looked out the window. The sky over the provincial capital was very blue, with a few white clouds drifting slowly by.
"It's sunny here too."
A soft laugh came from the other end of the phone.
"That's all that matters. I'm hanging up now. Long distances are expensive."
Okay. Bye-bye.
"Bye-Bye."
The call ended, and a busy tone came from the receiver. Lin Feng put the receiver back and stood there for a while.
Then he turned around and walked towards the cafeteria.
The canteen is on the first floor. It's very large and can seat several hundred people. Several signs hang on the wall with the eight large characters "Unite and Strive for Glory for the Country" written in white on a red background.
